The Big Hungry Tree
This book would not have been written, if not for the amazing imagination of my son Harry.
The sight of Harry and his Dad throwing things into a tree on the foreshore at Rye was very comical. Harry had kicked his football into a tree and it became stuck. On closer inspection we noticed a soccer ball also in the tree.
This problem needed to be solved. |
|
I could not keep up with the number of things they threw into the tree to knock the balls down. After some time Harry said to me, “Mum, that is a really Big Hungry Tree”. Harry is 10 and has Selective Mutism and Aspergers Syndrome, - also called Autism Spectrum Disorder.
For more information on ASD, go to www.autismvictoria.org.au
Being a mother of a child on the Spectrum means that I am constantly trying to help Harry solve problems and dissolve worries and fears. ASD does not define Harry, it simply means he sees and thinks about things a little different.
This is our first book in celebrating that unique and fascinating thought process.
This is indeed Harry’s story - I simply put it to rhyme. JR.
Quote from Professor Tony Attwood.
Leading expert on Autism Spectrum Disorder.
"I really enjoyed reading The Big Hungry Tree and know that it will be enchanting, not only for difficult children but will also help with regard to an increase in ASD awareness.
The book is not only entertaining, it is also educational from aspects of memory, to different ways of thinking and problem solving.
I certainly endorse the book."
